Se corrió la Tradicional Carrera Maya, siempre es especial el color de la carrera mas alla del frio que hizo, el color y calor lo puso la gente.
The Traditional Maya Race took place, and despite the cold, the vibrant atmosphere was as special as ever, thanks to the people. About 12,000 of us ran on Saturday, May 25th, with temperatures at just 1 degree, commemorating the May Revolution of 1810. It’s interesting how things have changed from military parades to celebrating by running. For me, it’s always about running with the Celeste y Blanca, as I always wear the national team jersey. It's like playing your own match. The Celeste y Blanca is always special.
On a personal note, I achieved a PB (Personal Best) in the 10K, the first goal I set when I joined the training group. It was accomplished in less than a month. I confirm that sometimes you have to run less to run better. Until now, I ran for fun, but now I'm going to run seriously. The goal is always to run better. There's a lot to do and improve, but this is just the beginning. Always with ATTITUDE, I ask myself, after 9 years of running, can one still improve? There are always new things to achieve, new goals to seek. And without underestimating the distance, the 10K is what I run every time I leave the house. But I had never broken the hour barrier running that distance. It was always my Rubicon to cross; I was always on the verge of achieving it, but it never happened. It happened in this emblematic race, which is special for me. Why is this race special to me? Because I ran it for the first time in 2019, relatively recently. It was the race I returned to after breaking my arm in that fateful 2019 when everything that could go wrong did. I can only salvage one good thing from that year. Because while they were telling me to take the time I needed, behind my back, they were stabbing me, preparing the betrayal I didn’t deserve. Years later, I can confirm it. It was my return to races in that fateful year. Then I ran it in 2022 under torrential rain throughout the race. Last year, 2023, there was a lot of humidity, but we were lucky it didn't rain. This year, with the sun of the 25th shining, I achieved what was and will be my Personal Best to beat, a mark that I will soon lower.
You can’t imagine how happy I was to beat that mark. Always in the process of improving and getting better. And thank goodness the sun came out because it was freezing, atypical for this time of year. It would have been lovely if it had snowed, but that would require other climatic conditions that are rare in the capital. It happened in 2007, on July 9th, in the middle of winter. Hopefully, one day I won’t have to go to Bariloche to run in the snow; instead, it would snow here, close to home, so I can run in those strange conditions.
A short, simple race but with immense happiness. Because when you search for something for years, and it keeps being denied, you leave your comfort zone to face new pains (I assure you, the pains were intense). These are the exercises given by the coach in the group, physical exercises I'm not used to, and step by step, I'm conditioning my body. I thought the training change wouldn't be as hard as it has been. In Zone 3, as I wanted, pushing myself to the max as I didn’t before, as my body has been asking for a while. I was cruising in first gear for 9 years and now switched to second gear. The engine remains intact.
Many times I dreamed I was flying (paraphrasing Migue Granados' show), dreamed I was flying on a track, and the strides I took kept me going. I ran, I pushed myself, and the sensations were very good. The second half was tough. I can say that I pushed hard in the first half; there’s still work to sustain the pace over more kilometers. I assure you, I didn’t expect to break the one-hour mark at this distance. For years, I thought it was impossible. With one month in the Group, I started with the goal to break that mark, and depending on the sensations, see if it was possible. The idea was not to slow down throughout the race. This was just the first big step of what's to come. It happened, barely, but it happened. We must continue towards the next goal.
